best time to visit zanzibar

When is the Ideal Time to Visit Zanzibar?

If you’re planning a trip to Zanzibar, the best time to visit is during its dry season which falls between June and October. This is also the high season for safaris in Tanzania, making the Zanzibar Archipelago a popular destination for tourists after their safari adventure. Nonetheless, Zanzibar is a tropical island that experiences regular sunshine and warm weather throughout most of the year. Here is a month-by-month guide to help plan your visit to the Zanzibar Archipelago:

Visiting Zanzibar between January and July:

If you don’t mind the heat and humidity, January to July is a great time to visit Zanzibar. The days are sunny and hot, with January to March being the best time for diving. During this period, the wind and tides are optimal, providing clear views of the lagoons and coral reefs, especially on the south coast. However, after mid-March, the “long rains” start becoming more imminent, and the weather changes.

Travelling to Zanzibar from August to October:

August is one of the last months with cooler weather in the Archipelago. The climate in Zanzibar from August to October is pretty warm and humid, with soothing breezes entering from the south as the islands warm up for summer. September is a beautiful month all over Zanzibar, and the Mafia Archipelago is unique, with turtle hatching and incredible diving conditions in deeper channels. However, scuba enthusiasts must plan their dives carefully during September, as some offshore areas may become rough. October is an ideal time to visit Zanzibar, with cool winds, calm seas, and clear skies.

Visiting Zanzibar during November and December:

The “short rains” usually start in November, breaking the dry mid-year winter. Clouds generally build up during the mornings, which can be relatively sunny and humid, and break in short-lived showers in the afternoons. This gives you enough time to retire to the beach bar, enjoy a massage or yoga session before returning to your sun lounger. However, there is more chance of sunshine towards Christmas and New Year’s Eve. The Mafia Archipelago is the place to go in December, with the opportunity to dive with whale sharks being its main highlight.
