Where to go in Zanzibar
Where to go in Zanzibar
Zanzibar Island, also called Unguja, is the most famous and significant island in the Zanzibar Archipelago. The island boasts a diverse coastline that offers a unique range of experiences – from rich culture in the south to luxurious relaxation in the north. There are plenty of places to explore beyond the lush palm trees, pristine beaches, and crystal-clear waters. The Zanzibar Archipelago consists of various islands and islets, some offering a more exclusive experience away from the crowds. Perfect for honeymooners and romantics. Let’s explore the different areas of Zanzibar, what to expect, and where to go in each one.
Zanzibar East Coast
Home to some of the most beautiful and serene beaches on the island, and there are plenty of hotels and lodges to choose from. However, it’s worth keeping in mind that the Indian Ocean’s tide can vary, so you may need to take a short walk to reach the water for swimming or snorkeling.
Zanzibar North Coast
The further north on Zanzibar, the more remote and less crowded the beaches become. Additionally, the north coast is the least affected by tidal changes.
Zanzibar North East Coast
The island’s prime location, most of the top-end accommodations can be found on its beaches. The diving experience in this area is excellent and the best reefs of the archipelago’s Mnemba islands are located approximately one kilometer or half a mile away from the shore.
Zanzibar South Coast
The population increases as you head further south on Zanzibar, creating more opportunities for cultural experiences, spice tours, and engagement with locals.
The southeast coast of Zanzibar
There are numerous beaches and resorts located on the southeast coast of Zanzibar, however, this region experiences a more noticeable tidal range compared to others.
Zanzibar’s west coast
There are fewer lodges on Zanzibar’s west coast, which feels a little more remote. However, it is home to Stone Town on the island’s central-west coast.
Stone Town
is the historical capital of Zanzibar and a visit to the island is incomplete without exploring its narrow, cobbled streets. Stone Town, situated on the main island, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was once the capital. There are several places of interest scattered around the town, including Beit el-Ajaib (House of Wonders), which was once a sultan’s palace. You can learn about the history, culture, cuisine, and ivory port of the formerly enslaved people on guided tours or explore the town at your own pace. Zanzibar has many hidden gems that offer a truly African island experience. These spots are not well-known but are worth exploring, especially if you prefer a laidback and authentic beach vacation.
