6 Days Kilimanjaro Climb via umbwe Route
TOUR OVERVIEW
The Umbwe Route is the most challenging and steepest path up Mount Kilimanjaro, recommended for experienced climbers seeking a true adventure. Though physically demanding, it offers breathtaking, less-traveled landscapes, and the rewards include awe-inspiring views and a deep sense of accomplishment. The 6-day trek provides a fast route to the summit with fewer crowds, making it an exhilarating and intimate climb.
Tour Plan
Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be transferred to your hotel in Moshi. Spend the evening relaxing and attending a briefing session to prepare for the adventure ahead.
After breakfast, you’ll be driven to the Umbwe Gate (1,600m / 5,249ft) to begin your trek. The route takes you through a thick rainforest, with steep and challenging paths leading to Umbwe Camp (2,850m / 9,350ft). This first day of trekking takes around 4-6 hours.
Today’s trek ascends steep ridges before transitioning into the moorland zone. After about 5-6 hours of hiking, you’ll arrive at Barranco Camp (3,950m / 12,959ft), where you'll be treated to stunning views of the Western Breach and Kibo Peak.
After breakfast, you’ll scale the Barranco Wall—a fun and challenging section that requires some scrambling. You’ll then trek through valleys and ridges until you reach Karanga Camp (3,995m / 13,106ft), taking about 4-5 hours to complete.
Today, the trail leads up to Barafu Camp (4,673m / 15,331ft), the final camp before your summit attempt. This 4-5 hour trek allows you time to rest and acclimatize before the summit push. You’ll have an early dinner and prepare for the midnight ascent.
Just after midnight, you’ll begin your climb to the summit. It’s a strenuous trek that rewards you with reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895m / 19,341ft), Africa’s highest point, by sunrise. After celebrating at the summit, you’ll descend to Mweka Camp (3,100m / 10,170ft) for a well-deserved rest after an intense 12-14 hour day.
On your final day, you’ll continue the descent through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate. Here, you will receive your summit certificates before heading back to Moshi for an overnight stay.
